Coffee machine error codes

Is your machine showing a code? Below are confirmed meanings for the relevant Philips, Saeco and Nivona families, with a safe action and a link to the manufacturer manual. Match the exact model first — the same number may mean something different on another generation.

Before you use the table

The same number means different things across product lines. This is not limited to Philips and Saeco: Nivona manuals describe Error 8 differently across generations, while some models have no public number map at all. Every code set therefore states the models it covers, exclusions, verification date and sources.

Where the manufacturer publishes no number map

Nivona models without a public numeric code map

This is not a gap to fill from an unofficial table. In the manuals for these models, NIVONA does not assign user-facing meanings to error numbers. The manufacturer tells the user to note the exact message or number, switch the machine off, unplug it and give service the model and serial number. NICR 520/530 use display symbols; the S1–S13 labels in the manual diagram must not be interpreted as error codes 1–13.

Models covered by this note

  • NICR 520 and 530 — symbol messages, no numeric error-code map
  • NICR 830 and variants from its two manuals: 831, 840, 845, 850 and 855
  • NIVO 8101, 8103, 8107 and 8112
  • NIVO 9101 and 9103

Verified code tables

Each table belongs to a specific device family. Do not use the brand name alone as the matching criterion.

Philips and Saeco — domestic machines with a display

This table applies to

  • Philips 4300 and 4400
  • Philips 5400 and 5500
  • Saeco Xelsis Deluxe and Xelsis Suprema
  • Saeco GranAroma and GranAroma Deluxe

Do not apply it to

  • Other Philips fully automatic ranges not listed under “Applies to”

The scope of this table is limited to the ranges listed above. Other generations may use indicator lights, icons or partly similar numbers with different diagnostic meanings. Do not use this table unless your model manual maps the code explicitly.

  • Baristina, Barista Brew, SENSEO®, L’OR Barista, Cafissimo and Philips filter and Turkish coffee makers

These are separate designs and do not use the EP automatic-machine code table. Interpret their indicator lights, icons and messages using the manual for the specific device family.

  • Saeco Professional, including Royal OTC

The professional line has its own code meanings. For instance E11 there indicates a break in the boiler temperature sensor circuit, and E19 a mains frequency problem. Applying the consumer table to these machines leads to a wrong diagnosis.

CodeMeaningRecommended action
01E01Blocked funnel or coffee chute — the grinder cannot feed ground coffee through properly.Switch the machine off and unplug it, remove the brew unit and clear the funnel with the handle of a spoon. Do not pour water into the bean hopper — that is the most common mistake with this fault and it ends in a clogged grinder.

If that does not help: Grinder repair and replacement 250 PLN

03E03The brew unit is dirty or insufficiently lubricated.Rinse the brew unit in fresh lukewarm water, leave it to dry completely and apply the correct grease. If the code returns, stop retrying and contact a service centre — the mechanism needs diagnosis.

If that does not help: Brew unit reconditioning 90–120 PLN

04E04The brew unit is incorrectly positioned or seated.Switch the machine off, remove the brew unit, set it to its neutral position and refit it until it clicks. Do not force it; if it will not seat or the code returns, contact a service centre.
05E05Air in the water circuit; possibly a badly prepared or clogged AquaClean filter.Restart the machine, remove the filter and check operation without it, then dispense 2–3 cups of hot water to bleed the circuit. Prepare the filter correctly or replace it. If the code remains, contact a service centre.

If that does not help: Descaling and chemical cleaning 150 PLN

11E11The machine needs to reach room temperature after transport or storage in cold or heat.Switch the machine off for 30 minutes, leave it at room temperature and restart. Do not speed up warming with a radiator or hairdryer. If the code remains, check that the power cord is firmly seated at the rear.
14E14The machine has overheated.Switch the machine off and leave it off for 30 minutes to cool down. If the code returns after restarting, contact a service centre.
19E19The machine needs to adjust to room temperature; an additional possible cause is a power cord that is not firmly seated.Switch the machine off for 30 minutes and leave it at room temperature. If that does not help, push the small plug of the detachable cord firmly into the rear socket. If the code still returns, contact a service centre.

Any other code — 02, 10, 15, 20 or 22 for example — has no single, universally applicable meaning. The manufacturer advises contacting a service centre. Do not assign a meaning from a random table found online: the same numbers mean different things across product lines.

Nivona CafeRomatica 720, 725 and 740 — ERROR codes 1–3

This table applies to

  • NICR 720
  • NICR 725
  • NICR 740

Do not apply it to

  • Other Nivona CafeRomatica models

This table comes from the shared manual for NICR 720, 725 and 740 only. The same numbers do not have a confirmed identical meaning on other generations.

  • NIVO 8000, NIVO 9000 and CUBE

These use different designs and manuals. The manufacturer does not publish this code map for them.

CodeMeaningRecommended action
1ERROR 1The machine is too cold.Leave the machine at room temperature for 1–2 hours before restarting it. Do not heat it with a hairdryer or next to a radiator. Contact a service centre if the code returns.
2ERROR 2The machine has not reached operating temperature.Leave the machine at room temperature for 1–2 hours and restart it. Do not speed up warming with an external heat source. The machine needs diagnosis if the code remains.
3ERROR 3The brewing unit is blocked or incorrectly positioned.Switch the machine off and unplug it. Do not pull or reposition the brewing unit by force — the manual directs this code to a service centre.

If that does not help: Brew unit reconditioning 90–120 PLN

A code not listed here

The manual for this family documents ERROR 1, 2 and 3 only. For any other number, note the exact message, switch the machine off, unplug it and give the service centre the model, serial number and error number. Do not transfer a meaning from another Nivona series.

Nivona CafeRomatica 660–680 — Error 8 without a disclosed cause

This table applies to

  • NICR 660
  • NICR 670
  • NICR 675
  • NICR 680

Do not apply it to

  • NICR 690 and 695

Their newer manual describes Error 8 as a drive positioning problem. Use the separate table for the newer generation.

  • Other Nivona series

The 660–680 manual does not disclose the technical cause of Error 8, so this procedure cannot be extended to other models.

CodeMeaningRecommended action
8FAULT 8 / SERVICE-TELA fault requiring service contact. In this manual the manufacturer does not disclose which component is involved.Switch the machine off and restart it once only. If the message returns, switch it off, unplug it and contact a service centre. Do not guess the cause or force the brewing unit to move.

Nivona CafeRomatica — Error 8: blocked or incorrectly seated brewing unit

This table applies to

  • NICR 758, 768, 778 and 788
  • NICR 759, 769, 779 and 789
  • NICR 820, 821, 823, 825, 838, 839, 841, 842, 848, 858 and 859

  • NICR 550/560, 690/695, 79x, 930, 96x/970 and 1040

Their manuals describe Error 8 more precisely as the drive being unable to position the brewing unit. Use the newer-generation table.

  • NIVO 8000 and NIVO 9000

The NIVO manuals publish no mapping of number 8 to a component.

CodeMeaningRecommended action
8BŁĄD 8 / ERROR 8The brewing unit is jammed, blocked or incorrectly seated — the exact wording depends on the model manual.Switch the machine off and unplug it. If the brewing unit can be removed without force, take it out and clean it thoroughly as described in the model manual. If it is stuck mid-position or the code returns, do not pull the mechanism — it needs service diagnosis.

If that does not help: Brew unit reconditioning 90–120 PLN

Nivona CafeRomatica — Error 8: drive cannot position the brewing unit

This table applies to

  • NICR 550 and 560

Their manuals give Error 8 a less specific or differently worded description. Match the exact model first, not just the brand.

  • NICR 520/530 and NICR 830

Their manuals publish no Error 8 mapping. On 520/530, the S1–S13 labels in the display diagram must not be mistaken for error numbers.

  • NIVO 8000 and NIVO 9000

The manuals for these newer families tell the user to note the error number and contact service, but publish no number map.

CodeMeaningRecommended action
8BŁĄD 8 / SERVICE-TELThe drive cannot position the brewing unit correctly.Switch the machine off and unplug it. Plug it back in and restart. Only after the machine finishes starting and is ready for operation, remove and clean the brewing unit as described in the manual. Do not force it out. If the code returns, the drive and brewing unit need diagnosis.

If that does not help: Brew unit reconditioning 90–120 PLN
