Switch off and wait a minute
Some models attempt to return the mechanism to its home position on restart. It is the simplest thing to try and sometimes the only one needed.
Remove the brew unit
Open the side or rear door and slide the unit out. If it will not come, do not pull hard — a mechanism stopped mid-travel blocks removal, and a snapped guide means replacing the whole assembly rather than reconditioning it.
Rinse in warm water
Rinse under running warm water, without detergent and never in a dishwasher. Detergent lingers in porous parts and taints the coffee, and dishwasher temperatures warp the plastic.
Check the mechanism moves
Once dry, try moving the mechanism by hand. It should travel smoothly, without resistance or catching. If it binds or stops halfway, the seals are worn and rinsing will not help.
Why this fails most often
The brew unit works on every single cup: it tamps the coffee, forces water through it under pressure and ejects the puck. It has seals, guides and moving parts, so by its nature it wears faster than the rest of the machine.
Then there is residue. Coffee particles and oils settle on the guides and harden over time. The mechanism starts to bind, the controller detects that it has not reached its target position, and shows an error.
Rinsing the unit once a week pushes that moment back by years. It literally takes two minutes and is the best-spent time in the whole ownership of a coffee machine.
Reconditioning versus replacement
In the vast majority of cases reconditioning is enough: full disassembly, removing residue, replacing seals and wear parts, lubrication and adjustment. That costs PLN 90–120 and takes one to three working days.
Replacing the whole assembly becomes necessary only when the housing has cracked or a guide has snapped — usually after someone tried to force the unit out. That is precisely the point at which do-it-yourself stops paying.
